Title / titre: Application of Statistical Signal Processing to Spatially-Separated Temperature Data

Abstract / résumé: Statistical signal processing is a broad and varied field, encompassing many aspects of applied statistics. In particular, time series analysis is a sub-area which has seen tremendous growth in the last fifty years, building on the work of Tukey and Blackman at AT&T Labs. We will consider the problems of estimating the power spectrum of a time series, develop a rough framework of the multitaper estimate, and consider a particular example of long-run temperature data from a number of European sites.

Prerequisites / choses nécessaires: To understand the application requires no more background than a typical conference attendee would have, but to fully enjoy the discussion on spectrum estimation, some background in Fourier analysis from an applied perspective would be helpful.
