Title / titre: A Quick Introduction to Representation Theory

Abstract / résumé: Given a finite group G, a representation of G is a homomorphism from G into the group of linear operators on some finite dimensional complex vector space V. The character of a representation is the trace of the resulting linear transformations. In this talk, properties of characters will be discussed and an application will be presented. Namely, the proof of Burnside's pq-theorem will be sketched.

Prerequisites / choses nécessaires: Basic knowledge of group theory and linear algebra required.
